The Constituent Assembly on 29th August 1947 appointed the Drafting Committee. This Committee was tasked to scrutinise the Draft Constitution of B. N. Rau (Constitutional Adviser to the Assembly) and produce a revised version before the Assembly.

The Drafting Committee sat for 141 days and produced the Draft Constitution with 395 articles and 8 Schedules.  The Assembly spent most of its time, 114 out of 165 days, debating this Draft Constitution.
